THIS WEEK: 25-31 October, 2016

2016, October: International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action (to Protect YOUR Children)

School repairs, maintenance and refurbishment are liable to generate 'significant' lead exposure risks for contractors, teaching staff and children where old and 'buried' lead-based paintwork is present.

In particular, children with special educational needs (SEND) must be considered to be a 'super vulnerable' at risk group. This is because their condition may already be partly due to pre-existing elevated blood lead levels.

Although there is no "safe" level of lead exposure there is no routine UK screening for child blood lead levels as part of SEND determination and statementing.

NEWS 2016, March 16th: Health fears over stripping of lead paint at primary school...*

LEAD EXPOSURE IS AN IMPORTANT CHILD SAFEGUARDING ISSUE.

BEWARE LEAD’s Ad-VERSE EFFECTS:

Lead Paint Dust and Kids DON'T GO!!
A thing all Mums and Dads should know

It's microscopic, has no 'nose'
Once on the hands straight in it goes

The essence of our firm suggestion:
YOU MUST AVOID ALL LEAD INGESTION

Advice to teachers everywhere:
There's lots around, so please take care

If you find Lead Dust in schools
It's likely they've been breaking rules

Not knowingly, perhaps, it's true
So here's the thing you need to do

You need to go and check the law
To learn the things required by "CLAW"

"Control of Lead at Work" that is
A matter that is all our biz

Protect yourselves and others, too
Inform, advise and follow through

Lead Paint Dust and Kids DON'T MIX
It causes harm you'll NEVER FIX!

Lead-safe working's what you need
For health and safety guaranteed

Assess your lead before you start
That's lead in blood, pumped through the heart

Then monitor your work exposure,
Maintain your body's health composure

Do all your work in isolation
And minimise contamination

Low heat, no flames no dry abrasion
No toxic fumes for inhalation

No dust, work wet and HEPA vac
Will stop the stuff from coming back

Wash hands and face, don't smoke, eat clean
And change your clothes in quarantine

Lead paint abounds in homes and schools
You must comply.  It's in the rules!!

BE AWARE!  IF YOUR SCHOOL PRE-DATES 1988 you should expect to come across surfaces previously coated with lead-containing paint. The older the building, the greater the amount of lead in paint there is likely to be.  The severity of the problem depends on the amount of lead-based paint involved and the full extent of the proposed works.

PROBLEMDISTURBING PAINTWORK IN EXISTING SCHOOL BUILDINGS CAN CREATE 'SIGNIFICANT' LEAD EXPOSURE RISKSLEAD PAINT TESTING, OR MORE EXTENSIVE LEAD SURVEYS, SHOULD BE COMPLETED BEFORE WORK STARTS.  HEAD TEACHERS, SCHOOL GOVERNORS, THEIR PROFESSIONAL ADVISERS AND CONTRACTORS NEED TO BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
